The winners of the 2008 Flexible Packaging Achievement Awards winners were announced on March 5, at the FPA Annual Meeting in Orlando, Fla. The judges reviewed 75 flexible packaging entries, of which, 26 packages received a total of 29 Flexible Packaging Achievement Awards. Judges for this year’s awards include: Dr. Bruce Harte, Ph.D, Michigan State University School of Packaging; Michael Richmond, Ph.D, Packaging & Technology Integrated Solutions; and Sean Riley, editor, PMT Magazine.

Product: Royco Sauce Pouch

The Royco Sauce Pouch presents consumers with an appealing and functional package for Royco’s line of heatand-serve sauces and gravies. The shaped retortable pouch protects its contents with barrier properties, offers a costeffective alternative to rigid packaging and functions well during the heating and serving process. This also won a Gold Award in Packaging Excellence.

Product: Ultra Peel Retortable Membrane End

Supplier: Watson Standard Adhesives & Sonoco Flexible Packaging

Ultra Peel membrane ends are the first retortable, peelable membrane ends in the U.S. market and represent significant advancement over existing retortable end technology. The user friendly, reverse printable, foil laminate structure has a superior opening initiation and a more controlled peel than easy-open rigid ends. This also won a Gold Award in Technical Innovation.

Daniele’s new Delizia President’s Prosciutto Re-Seal It Package combines proprietary label technology with high performance barrier films. The Daniele package uses the Re-seal It packaging system, which provides an innovative easy-to-open label with repeat reseal for meat and related thermoform packaging applications.

The iTea Wand solution creates a new product and method for brewing tea. The iTea Wand has a built-in mechanical filter system that restricts the bitter components within the pod while releasing the liquor. The consumer just needs to drop the stickpack into hot water.

This package offers an environmentally friendly solution through the use of non-volatile water-based adhesives. A single 60-gram package replaced the equivalent of 12 one-gallon bottles.

The Hot N Handy Rotisserie Pouch is a flexible all-in-one package that is designed to aid consumers by giving them features such as a built-inhandle for easy carrying, a resealable zipper for reclosing and a slim profile for saving leftovers. This also won a Silver Award in Packaging Excellence.

The stand-up pouch solution for the Perdue Bourbon Chicken provides a large billboard for the customer to display the package contents. Through the use of color separations, process and PMS colors, the image catches the eye.

Nestlé achieved an upgraded brand image by moving to Nordenia’s FlexBox. This side-gusseted bag offers convenience features such as resealable tape and protection from infestation and the environment. High-impact graphics and additional billboard space allow for improved visual communication with the consumer.

Pliant’s freezable/microwaveable SteamQuick package technology allows frozen food to be steam cooked in a microwave oven without having to remove the food from the bag. In the microwave, the package allows steam to build, cooking the food, and then safely vents near the end of the cook cycle.
