By John Baumann

FPA is working with its membership to implement initiatives that focus on key industry challenges and opportunities, provide information and data that keeps you informed and your company competitive; and develop programs that help you understand - and meet - the needs of your stakeholders, industry customers, retailers, NGOs, legislators, and regulators.

FPA Programs
As your customers and other stakeholders push for greater transparency of sustainable business practices throughout the value chain, FPA is providing members with insight into and guidance on sustainability information most frequently requested by investment firms, major retailers, and your customers.

FPA commissioned Packaging & Technology Integrated Solutions (PTIS) to conduct the FPA Corporate Sustainability Metrics for Flexible Packaging Manufacturers study, which identifies critical metrics flexible packaging companies should address in their corporate sustainability reporting.

FPA will soon issue a Guidance on Preparing Corporate Sustainability Reports. The Guidance will help FPA members assess and measure specific metrics including greenhouse gas emissions, energy and water use, and generated waste. FPA will also conduct a webinar to review the Guidance and discuss metrics reporting.

Additionally, FPA remains deeply invested in assisting members identify potential end-of-life options for flexible packaging. FPA has commissioned Earth Engineering Center of Columbia University to explore the most promising technologies for resource recovery from flexible packaging waste. Through this research, FPA is also examining the environmental and economic impact associated with resource recovery technologies. The next phase of this research will include the launch of a pilot program to collect and test flexible packaging waste as feedstock for the production of energy.

FPA’s Flexible Packaging Sustainability Toolkit is an excellent resource to utilize as you continue to discuss the sustainability benefits of flexible packaging with your customers. The Toolkit, which includes educational and marketing resources that promote the environmental advantages of using flexible packaging, is available electronically on the FPA Web site, or in a hard copy version by contacting FPA.

Representing the Industry
In addition to sustainability, FPA is ensuring that the industry’s position is represented in other key areas such as Extended Producer Responsibility and the Walmart Sustainability Packaging Initiative. FPA is also actively monitoring the developments of climate change legislation, greenhouse gas reporting and permitting rules, and amendments to the Toxic Controls Substances Act.
